Summer might seem like the season to slow down, but for many of us, it feels more like a marathon.
Family visits, reunions, cookouts, church events, grandkids, vacations (that we’re often planning for everyone else)—and somehow we’re expected to keep it all together with a smile. Sound familiar?
For Black women over 50, this season can bring joy and overwhelm. And while we may have mastered the art of multitasking, it’s time to ask: What’s the cost to our peace, our health, and our spirit?
Let’s talk about how to honor our busy lives—without burning out.
Let’s Be Real About the Stress
You may be navigating:
- Caring for aging parents or grandkids
- Hosting family events (because everyone comes to your house)
- Managing work, business, or community obligations
- Trying to squeeze in “fun” without feeling even more tired
On the outside, we handle it. But inside, we may feel stretched, anxious, or emotionally exhausted. Stress isn’t weakness—it’s a sign that your body and mind are asking for help, space, or rest.

💆🏾♀️ 7 Ways to Manage Stress This Summer (and Still Enjoy It!)
1. Choose What Actually Matters
You don’t have to say yes to everything. Ask:
- Does this event bring me joy?
- Am I doing this out of guilt or love?
Protect your energy like you protect your purse—both are valuable.
2. Start Your Morning with You
Before the world needs you, take 10–15 minutes for you:
- Deep breathing or prayer
- Stretching or light movement
- Journaling one thing you’re grateful for
This small ritual grounds your day.
3. Delegate Without Apology
Stop doing it all alone. If you’re planning a gathering, ask:
- “Can you bring a dish?”
- “Can you handle setup/cleanup?”
Let people help you. You don’t have to be the superhero every time.
4. Hydrate and Fuel Your Body
You need real energy to move through the day. Sip water, eat fresh foods, and avoid skipping meals (especially while running errands or chasing after little ones).
Pro tip: Keep fruit, almonds, or granola bars in your bag to avoid running on fumes.
5. Create Boundaries Around “Rest Time”
Even if your schedule is packed, claim time to rest—and protect it.
That means:
- Saying “no” without explanation
- Turning your phone off for an hour
- Napping guilt-free
Rest isn’t lazy. It’s a spiritual practice.
6. Don’t Ignore What Your Body Is Telling You
Pay attention to:
- Fatigue
- Irritability
- Headaches
- Trouble sleeping
These are signs that you may need to slow down, seek support, or just pause. Your body is wise—listen to her.
7. Do Something Just for You
Once a week, do something with no purpose other than joy:
- A solo lunch date
- Sitting in the sun with your favorite music
- Visiting a bookstore or spa
- Saying “no” and going to bed early
You’ve earned every ounce of rest, fun, and ease.
💬 Real Talk: You Deserve Peace
As Black women, many of us were raised to keep it moving—no matter what. But in this stage of life, it’s okay to unlearn that.
Busy doesn’t mean better. And burnout isn’t a badge of honor.
You are allowed to slow down.
You are allowed to protect your peace.
You are allowed to rest—and still be worthy.

You’ve spent decades caring for others, showing up strong, and making magic happen. Now, it’s time to give some of that love back to yourself.
Summer will always be full—but you get to decide what “full” looks like. Let it be full of joy, rest, boundaries, and balance.
