For serial entrepreneur-turned-hemp farmer Carole Y. Jones, every day is Earth Day (it’s Saturday, April 22 for the rest of us). And to say this hemp-tress has a “growth mindset” is an understatement! Since 2021, Jones has worked the Cameron, South Carolina soil to grow hemp. Her crops include industrial hemp for fiber, and the other kind, the latter bearing juicy names like Red Bordeaux, Dixie Chick, and Cherry Wine. “We experiment with different genetics and will develop our own seeds,” she says.

She attends farming/AgBiz classes at Clemson and South Carolina State Universities and is also learning the secrets of successful cultivation hands-on from growers with more than a half-century of experience. “We are housed on a 160-acre farm and have over 400 additional acres to develop,” she says. “We will not grow any more than 50 acres this year.” Working with the iconic Ulmer Farms brand, her website soon will offer a range of organic vapes, pre-rolled smokables, delectable edibles, CBD oils, and topicals including a THC-free CBD Natural Cooling Muscle Pain Gel.         

Noting that the Farm Bill of 2018 legalized hemp across all 50 states, she says what she loves most about her current project is …the challenge, I love learning new things.” Prior to digging into life as a grower, Jones’ many talents were also used to cultivate talent, sales, and media traction in the arenas of human resources, education, training, fund raising and marketing, beginning with her founding of Encore Temps, Inc. a staffing agency. As President and Development Director of Sullivan International, she jointly directs and participates in the design, development, implementation, sales, and marketing of training support projects with West L.A. College (LACCD) and I-Train – Hospitality and Youth Sports Officiating and Game Management, among many other accomplishments. This adventurous mother and gifted grandmother was born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina, has spent four decades in Los Angeles, and is an enthusiastic world traveler. She has dedicated her diverse career to cultivating Black excellence, creating opportunities for youth, and developing opportunities for women. Truly, a fine flower in fullest bloom.
