For 28 years, Cecelia managed people, policies, and paperwork. She was excellent at her job. She was also quietly starving. At 54, she took a Saturday pottery class at a community arts center “just to try something with my hands.” Three years later, she sells hand-thrown ceramics at markets and online, has a small studio in her garage, and describes her life as “finally loud in the right ways.” She didn’t quit her day job immediately. Diane, 61 — First Novel at 59

Diane raised three children, survived a divorce, and spent 20 years as a school librarian who quietly envied the authors on her shelves. At 57, she started writing. At 59, she self-published her debut novel — a multigenerational story about a Black Southern family’s migration north. It sold modestly. It changed her entirely. “I’m working on the second,” she says. “I know now that I will write until I physically cannot.”
